Ved pause var hjemmeholdet foran med 2-0 efter scoringer af John McGinn og Douglas Luiz, og i anden halvleg blev det endnu værre for Everton.
Her blev målmand Jordan Pickford passeret yderligere to gange af henholdsvis Leon Bailey Jhon Duran. Dermed fik Aston Villa revancheret førsterunde-nederlaget til Newcastle.
